Problem-Based Learning in Civic and Ethics of Secondary Education

Abstract

Summary

The research purpose was to identify what competencies students develop when working with the Problem-Based Learning method (PBL method). The approach used was qualitative of exploratory-descriptive type. The study sample is non-probabilistic for convenience and homogenous from 153 students of first, second and third grade of a public middle school in the municipality of San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, Mexico. A survey designed in Google Forms was used. The survey was sent electronically and answered through a link that was provided at the time of its application. This survey collected the opinion of the students regarding their academic experience using the PBL method in the discipline of Civic and Ethics Education in the first trimester of the school year 2023- 2024. Based on the results obtained, it´s concluded that the role of the teacher as a guide, tutor or facilitator is decisive so that the active student and learning maker develop competencies such as: identification, analysis and problem solving, metacognition, collaborative work, creativity, research, self-direction, critical thinking, active participation, autonomy and effective communication.
